The Taiwan Wind Power Industry Development Association held its inaugural meeting yesterday (19th). Founding members include more than 40 domestic companies, including Century Wind Power, Hsin Kong Steel, Walsin Lihua, Senwei Energy, Huacheng Electric, and Shihlin Electric. Lai Wen-hsiang, chairman of Century Wind Power and the chairman of the board, said that a wind turbine has hundreds of parts from top to bottom. Currently, most domestic production projects are just assembly. The association's goal is to improve the local supply chain, producing everything from screws to generators.
Connecting the domestic wind power supply chain, aiming for "all-inclusive manufacturing in Taiwan, from top to bottom"
To strengthen the domestic wind power supply chain, relevant industry players formed the Taiwan Wind Power Industry Development Association, holding its inaugural meeting and first board of directors and supervisors on the 19th. Century Wind Power Chairman Lai Wen-hsiang was elected as the association's first chairman.
Lai Wen-hsiang stated that wind turbines have hundreds of components, and the current localization policy focuses primarily on assembly. Crucial components like the generator rarely use domestic parts, which is unhelpful to the local industry. The association's goal is to connect the domestic supply chain, producing everything from a screw to a generator in Taiwan.
Lai Wen-hsiang also mentioned that the number of wind farms will grow exponentially in the future. Once the local supply chain is established, it will also be possible to attract foreign generator manufacturers to set up factories in Taiwan and introduce key motor technologies.
In his speech, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Lin Quanneng stated that the domestic wind power industry truly needs to establish localized production capabilities, and establishing the association is like preparing for "a moment of strength." Going forward, the central government will continue to collaborate across ministries and with local governments to help strengthen competitiveness across the industry supply chain.
Green energy becomes an election battleground, with the wind power industry drawing attention.
The inaugural ceremony was held at the Century Wind Farm site at Taipei Harbor in Bali, New Taipei City. Former Minister of Transportation Lin Chia-lung, who is considering running for mayor of New Taipei City at the end of the year, and current Taoyuan Mayor Zheng Wencan attended the ceremony. Lin recounted his contributions to Taipei Harbor during his tenure as Minister of Transportation, including promoting the Taipei Harbor Green Energy Zone, resolving port infrastructure issues, facilitating project funding, and improving external transportation. He also stated that if elected mayor of New Taipei City, he would prioritize wind power and logistics warehousing as key industries, provide administrative assistance, establish a wind power operations and maintenance base, and support cross-energy system integrators, making the wind power industry the next national guardian.
The New Taipei City government issued a press release, stating that the Economic Development Bureau emphasized that Century Wind Power was attracted by Taipei Port's infrastructure. The company's Phase III investment was facilitated through New Taipei City's one-stop "Quick Service Window" for investment promotion, with the city promptly clearing all investment obstacles and assisting in progress. The government also welcomed the central government's efforts to localize offshore wind power components and collaborate with New Taipei City's manufacturing industry to establish New Taipei City as a national hub for the offshore wind turbine industry chain.
Regarding the development of green energy, New Taipei City stated that in recent years it has vigorously promoted the development of renewable energy such as wind power, geothermal energy, and solar photovoltaics. For example, it recently approved the development of "Jinshan Sulfur Ziping" in the Datun Mountain geothermal resource area, with a development area of nearly 20,000 square meters and an estimated geothermal capacity of more than 4MW.
