To accelerate the semiconductor industry's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) announced today (3rd) the establishment of the world's first Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC). Currently, more than 60 founding members from across the semiconductor value chain have joined the initiative. Five Taiwanese companies have joined, including ASE, TSMC, Nanya Technology, GlobalWafers, and Hermes-Epitek.
The world's first semiconductor industry chain alliance aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050
SEMI issued a press release today (3rd) stating that the Global Semiconductor Climate Coalition (SCC) is the world's first alliance composed entirely of companies from the semiconductor value chain. In the future, members will maintain close communication, jointly innovate technologies, set specific carbon reduction targets, and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. At the same time, they will also publish annual progress reports on the three major carbon emission areas.
The SCC has 65 founding members, including five Taiwanese companies: ASE, GlobalWafers, Hermes-Epitek Technology, Nanya Technology, and TSMC. Other members include world-renowned companies such as AMD, ASML, GlobalFoundries, Google, Intel, Micron, Microsoft, and Samsung Electronics.
SEMI Global Marketing Director and Taiwan President Shih-Lun Tsao expressed his delight at the five Taiwanese companies' early support. He explained that SEMI considers climate change and sustainability issues to be key development priorities and is committed to uniting Taiwanese semiconductor companies to expand their global influence. He called on more Taiwanese companies to join in contributing to mitigating global warming.
Wu Zhixiang, Vice President of Nanya Technology and Chairman of the SEMI Taiwan Sustainability Committee, stated that the SCC provides an innovative platform for the semiconductor industry to jointly combat the risks and opportunities brought by climate change. This allows Taiwan to more actively participate in the sustainable development of the global semiconductor industry. Nanya Technology is honored to be a founding member of the SCC and will work with value chain partners to align with RE100 and gradually achieve net zero carbon emissions.
Semiconductor climate action is urgent SCC will hold a press conference at COP27
SEMI noted that SCC founding members unanimously support the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and acknowledge the urgency of climate action across the semiconductor industry chain. SCC member companies and SEMI representatives will hold a formal press conference during the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Mousumi Bhat, Vice President of Global Sustainability at SEMI, believes that while companies are already individually promoting carbon reduction measures, the semiconductor industry still needs to collaborate and jointly develop green solutions to drive sustainable growth across the entire value chain. The support from SCC's founding members is encouraging, and the industry looks forward to setting more constructive sustainability goals in the future.
Intel Executive Vice President Keyvan Esfarjani stated that reducing greenhouse gas emissions requires a significant amount of technological innovation and collaboration, and is not something that can be solved by a single company. Intel is honored to support climate action as a founding member of the SCC and hopes to mitigate climate change through the joint efforts of the semiconductor value chain in the future.
